Virgie’s Picks: Are you a Darling Mummy?

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Back in March I told you all about how much I love the shirts at Darling Mummy. I ended up ordering the “Don’t mess with mommy” shirt and I absolutely LOVE IT! I get so many compliments on it, and the customer service at Darling Mummy is outstanding!

New to the Darling Mummy site are hilarious notepads with their signature catchy phrases. I still really like the skull and crossbones, and the carpool fuel notepad would be perfect for my girlfriend Julie.

Perfect for grocery or “to do” lists, these are great holiday gift ideas for girlfriends, too! Have a friend who loves her wine? Nothing wrong with a little Mommy Juice.

Stock up now before they sell out. Get free 1st class shipping on all orders through October 15th using coupon code momsquawk during checkout.

Virgie’s Picks: Etsy

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

If you’re a sucker for handmade boutique crafty things, you’re going to love Etsy. Etsy is an online marketplace made by artists for artists to sell handmade items.

I spent hours looking at the children’ssection, yesterday. I haven’t even begun to look at their other categories, like housewares and paper goods.

Ebay eat your heart out.

Virgie’s Picks: Finally, no more lost binkies!

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

My daughter would take nothing but a Soothie pacifier. We got a couple from the hospital before we were discharged and no matter how hardI tried to get her take the “cute” ones at the store, she wanted this bendy green thing.

She’s 19 months old and still has to have her pacifier during most of the day. We have a bajillion of these green binkies all over our house and in our cars. Why so many Because up until this past weekend, I couldn’t find a pacifier clip that fit well enough to keep it attached to her. We’d be driving down the freeway at full speed and my daughter would chuck her pacifier somewhere in the car and then cry bloody murder because she couldn’t find it. We’d be shopping in the mall and I’d realize that she’d thrown it out of her stroller somewhere along the way. I was constantly replacing these pacifiers every week.

Finally, the people at Soothie have made a pacifier clip especially designed for their pacifiers; and they’re cute, too. They have two different styles, a blue penguin for a boy, an adorable pink flower for a girl. They’re made with the same bendy material that their pacifiers are made of with a plastic clip that can attach to clothing or seat straps. We’ve had ours since Saturday and so far, no lost binkies.

We found ours at our nearest Target store.

Virgie’s Picks: Darling Mummy

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

You’re fun and hip. You’re a mom who sacrifices here and there when needed, but you’ve never sacrificed your sense of style. Underneath that facade of your pulled back pony tail and solid colored t-shirt, is the woman that oozes funky, hip and cool.

I haven’t been this excited over a cool Virgie Pick since the artwork pins or the mommy tags. Do your inner diva a favor and visit Darling Mummy. Darling Mummy is the brain child of two Atlanta, Georgia friends who set out to create “carpool couture”. They wanted to design shirts that were comfortable but still fun to wear.

They succeeded. I want this one and I have to have this one, too.

Virgie’s Picks: Glamajama

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

I’m a sucker for anything blingy. The shinier, the better. The only thing better than a new shiny item in my closet, is one on my daughter. If you’re like me, you HAVE TO check out Glamajama.

Glamajama was started by a first time mom that was tired of seeing the same plain packaged onesies. She decided to decorate her sons onesie wardrobe with cute sayings and soon strangers wanted to know where they could buy her designs. Now she sells her line overseas and in my favorite store.

Made with soft cotton onesies, tshirts and pants, glamajama turns boring into hip and funky. She’s got shirts with saying such as “ladies man” and you will die when you see these ruffled bottomed onesies.

There’s something for everyone, Mommy and me sets, and even shirts for your dog.

Virgie’s Picks: Valentine’s Day

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Valentine’s Day is next week, and I’m running out of time to get something for my daughter to send to our extended families.  We live pretty far from my in-laws, and I really wanted to send them something to let them know we’re missing and loving them.  Flowers are so expensive this time of the year and greeting cards are so common.  I was on the hunt for fun, easy, quick crafts that my daughter and I could do together to send to our loved ones.

The website for the new magazine Wondertime has a few craft ideas that literally take minutes to make.  Make some tissue paper flowers and tie a ribbon around them for a bouquet that lasts.  We decided to make the heart magnets.  Just get a magnetic sheet, color or draw on it, and cut into heart shapes.  Add your child’s age on the back and create a cool keepsake for when they’re older.   Melting grandma’s heart is a bonus.

Virgie’s Picks: Bring Your Own Gown.

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

I didn’t get a birth day present.  I didn’t even know that some new mothers got birth day presents after giving birth to their children.  There should be a section on the EPT Clear Blue Easy Pregnancy Test information pamphlet that gives us first-time moms some tips, like, start thinking of what you can milk out of your significant other.  I got gypped.

I would have been cheap, too.  I didn’t want fancy jewelry or a room full of roses.  I just wanted something comfortable to wear.  The thought of wearing that ginormous hospital gown with my stuff showing through big arm holes and my booty sticking out the back, made me cringe.  I would have asked for something that helped me feel comfortable trying to learn to breastfeed.  I would have asked for something that kept my private parts, private, when my in-laws visited our room.  I would have asked for Dearjohnnies.

Dearjohnnies are super soft cotton pajamas that you can wear in the hospital.  They’re so much cuter than those ugly blue patterned hospital gowns.  They snap button at the shoulders to help make breastfeeding easier.  And I love that they snap down the back, too.

I’m sure my father-in-law would agree.

Virgie’s Picks: Rockabye Baby

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

The batteries died in our FP Ocean Wonders Aquarium yesterday.  Don’t tell my daughter, but I’m secretly happy about it.  Almost every night for the past 18 months I’ve heard the same bedtime lullabies.  Over and over and over.  Instead of replacing those batteries, today I’m off to find Rockabye Baby CD’s.

Rockabye Baby Records transforms your favorite Rock group hits into lullabies.  There are several alternative bands available now and many due for release within the next month.  I think I’ll pick up the Nirvana album, and preorder No Doubt

Somewhere between Baby Einstein and Nine Inch Nails, mommy is going to find some relaxation, too.

Virgie’s Picks: Totally Out of Hand

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

Happy New Year MomSquawkers!  I hope your holidays were everything you wanted and more.  Our faithfuls will remember the Mommy Tags that I was wanting.  I got them and I LOVE THEM!!  If you didn’t get them and still want them, they’re definitely worth a second look.

I am now coveting Totally Out of Hand, Child Artwork Jewelry.  I cannot wait until my 18 month old can draw so that I can get one of these.  Actually, this may be on my next Christmas list.

This is the COOLEST thing I’ve seen in a long time.  You send in (via fax, email, or snail mail) a copy of your child’s artwork and they turn it into sterling silver jewelry.  They’ll even engrave the back of the artwork with your child’s name and age, for free.

Their website has several examples of before and afters that I can’t copy here because they’re rollover images, so go there and check it out.  And yes, Megan, they ship internationally.

Special thanks to my Latina homegirl, Erin, for the tip!

Virgie’s Picks: Are We There Yet?

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

Holidays always remind me of my childhood.  Mom and Dad would pack up the car and off we went to Grandma’s house.  5 hours away.  UGH!  Don’t get me wrong.  I love my dear old Grammy, God rest her soul, I just always dreaded the drive.

My brother and I played the license plate game, the alphabet game, and of course the old standby, sure to upset your parents and inflict pain on your sibling, game of pididdle/pidaddle.  But all of those got boring after a half hour.  I tried to read in the car once, but quickly learned that it made me sick to my stomach.  My dad wasn’t too happy about that detour.

Fast forward 25 years later and now kids have DVD players in the car and now, YOU have ME, your personal e-shopper.  I will save your sanity for all your road trips to come with one little click of your mouse.  Madallie.com

Madallie is your one stop shop for children’s travel items.  Now little Sally can practice her spelling words, draw pictures, or play hangman on this Chalk Mat (and it’s on sale!!!).  Check out their selection of travel games including bingo and checkers.  They also have travel pillows and blankets that make me want to be young again, and totes to put everything in.  I’ll take one of each of these, thanks!

Planning a family vacation?  Get your kids excited about your trip ahead of time with these travel guides made just for them.

Happy Trails!
