A Womb with a View: Telling the Husband
I’m pregnant. I had a few days to really adjust to the idea before my husband returned from a 12-day Hawaiian vacation with his best friend. I had no idea how to break the news to him, I’d done so well keeping the secret. After much deliberation, a very good friend suggested that I tell him using decorated holiday cookies…and so I baked up a couple gingerbread men and left them on the counter for when he got home.
Fast-forward to later on that day, he’s home and playing with Cole, our 2 ½ year old son. The cookies are in the kitchen and we’re in the living room… I’m so nervous, why won’t he go in the kitchen?!?! Finally I tell Cole to show Daddy the cookies we made. So Marc and Cole venture into the kitchen and I hide around the corner watching his reaction.
Marc reads the names of the cookies, “Mommy…Daddy… (super long pause) DORIAN!?!?!?!?” His face says it all, he has noticed the baby blue baby in the Mommy cookie’s belly. He doesn’t say anything for what seems like forever. When I see tears building up in his eyes I breath a sigh of relief. He goes on to ask me about a hundred questions…how long have I known? When am I due? Is it a boy or a girl (yes, he asked me that)? Does Cole know? Does the Nanny know? Who knows? When can we tell people? How do I feel? Do I need anything… and on and on.
And then he just hugs me. And tells me thank you. And kisses my belly. And today, I love my husband.

We are calling the baby in my belly, baby giraffe. When I asked Cole if he wanted a brother or sister he said No. So I told him I have a baby in my belly and he asked if it was a baby ‘raffe (baby giraffe). So that’s what we’re calling this little guy.
