Desde mi ventana: Walking for a cause

My body hurts pretty bad today. I cannot feel my legs and I’m very tired. I’m also very happy.

On Sunday I went to Caminantes por Amor (A Love Walk) where I helped raise money to a provide better quality of life to those in need. I had to walk 14 kilometers (some of them across mountains). There were over 2,000 people and all of them had the same goal: no matter how long it took we just wanted to get to the finish line.

Many people contribute their time, money and effort to many specific causes. There are the AIDS Walking Program, Prevent Child Obesity, March of Dimes, and Walking for Diabetes, among others. Whether you are trying to help cancer patients or prevent child abuse, participating in these types of events show that you care. Instead of just giving up some money, being part of this event gives people the opportunity to interact with many others that are suffering. This provides the perfect scenario to expose your kids to real issues and to empower them in the art of giving. Kids should be exposed to these types of activities early on their lives so these experiences can help them become better adults.

During the last kilometer I barely walked in a straight line and had trouble focusing on my feet. I just felt the ache in my feet, yet I was so proud of myself. I have never walked that distance and even if I was tired I completed my goal. Suddenly, when I was ready to drop on the ground and just let people pass me by I came to a sad reality: an 80 year old woman passed me. She was walking like she was just getting out of a car and it looked like she just splashed some water on her face. She looked great and she even smiled at me!

As I said before I’m pretty tired but I feel great because I tried to make a difference. This year it wasn’t just a thought, I was part of a great effort. Are you ready to make a difference?
