Iron Deficiency and Weight, Daycare: A new study out of UT Southwestern Medical Center finds that overweight toddlers and those not enrolled in daycare are more likely than their peers to be iron deficient. 20% of overweight toddlers were iron deficient, compared with 8% of those at risk of becoming overweight and 7% of normal weight toddlers. This study is the first to report an association between overweight and iron deficiency in children from one to three years old. Prolonged bottle feeding has been linked with iron deficeincy: It may be that toddlers who are not weaned in good time become accustomed to drinking too much milk and juice and do not develop a healthy, balanced diet.

10% of those not in daycare were iron deficient, vs. 5% of those in daycare. The researchers note that the reasons for this finding are unclear and need further study.

Crib Recall: The CPSC announced a recall of NettoCollection “Moderne” and “Loft” cribs because the slats can separate from the side rails, posing a strangulation hazard. Consumers should contact the manufacturer at (866) 996-3886 for replacement side rails.

Also recalled: Jubee kids’ bunk beds. The beds with model number 82008 do not conform to federal safety standards; the wooden side slats can separate from the bed frame, causing the upper bunk to collapse. Consumers may contact the distributor, d-Scan Inc., at (800) 932-2006, for a repair kit. Children should not use the beds until the repairs are made.
