nullThe V8 won’t help: According to a new study, eating more fruits and vegetables will not prevent a recurrence of breast cancer. The best you can do is eat the recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Previous studies had shown mixed results of packing in the extra fruits and veggies, but this study was the longest and largest, following 3,000 women for 6 to 10 years, where one group ate the normal recommended 5 servings, and the other group ate 8 servings plus 16 ounces of fresh vegetable juice. Recurrence of breast cancer was 17 percent for both groups.

Vitamin C won’t help either: For the general population, taking daily vitamin C supplements do next to nothing to prevent a cold. Even less effective is dosing up on vitamin C at the first signs of a cold. The supplement does seem to have a slight effect on the length of the cold, reducing the duration by 8 percent for adults and 13 percent for children. According to Australian researchers, where this study was conducted, their results were so conclusive that no further testing was necessary, although more research should be done on heavy exercisers and those subjected to low temperatures (e.g., soldiers doing military exercises in sub-arctic regions), where vitamin C did seem to cut the risk of catching a cold by up to 50 percent.
