Eat Like a Star

Most parents want to provide healthy eating alternatives to their kids. Whether they eat vegetables, fruits or cereal we want to make sure that they choose alternatives that enhance nutritional development.

But what about us? What about our eating decisions? According to Sparkpeople, children learn from their parents. They make healthy eating decisions by watching what we eat. We are their role models and if we chose to eat fast food fries over an apple, chances are they will prefer that too.

There are some interesting tips on how to help our picky eaters make mealtime a positive experience. Of those tips included in the article, I never thought that washing hands can contribute to make a meal a more pleasant experience. If you force your children to wash hands in a hurry, chances are they will not be willing to eat the food.

I will not tell you that I always make healthy choices. That is a reality. But I do have a concience: my second son. Part of our Puertorrican culture is eating rice and beans almost daily. Whenever I decide to start eating healthy, my son says: “Come on mom, lets eat brocolli and carrots today.” He even eats more than me! While my other kids choose rice and beans he always eats a lot of vegetables, and instead of ice cream he prefers an apple.

I guess the bottom line is that we need to provide choices to our kids while letting them know that those choices taste good. Give your child fruits and veggies but make sure you eat them too!
